Below is a list of gear that will take you from beginner to professional. As your podcast grows, the gear here can grow with you.

Microphones

ATR2100x

ATR2100x Podcast Microphone

This mic is all you really need to get started.

At around $99 this mic is hands down the best bang for your buck that I’ve used. Touting both XLR/USB outputs, this is a great starter mic. Just plug it into your computer and you’re ready to record.

The stand on this mic is flimsy, so you’ll want an upgrade immediately.

InnoGear Table Top Stand, Gator Table Top Stand, Boom Arm

Shure MV7

The best little plug-and-play mic on the market.

A step up at $269, but with the portability, XLR/USB combo, and unparalleled sound, you won’t regret the investment.

Shure SM7B

Shure SM7B Podcast Microphone

The sweetest, velvetiest mic you can buy for under $500. Selling for $399, you’re going to love the way you sound. It’s XLR only, so this one doesn’t plug directly into your computer, you’ll need the Rodecaster Pro to power this beast (see below.)

Headphones

ATH-M20x

M20x Headphones

You should always record with headphones on. This a solid option that won’t hurt your ears or break the bank.

ATH-M30x

M30x Podcast Headphones

Similar to the M20x, but you’ll find these a tad more comfy and, unlike the M20x, they fold up neatly for storage and portability.

Sony MDR7506

Sony MDR-7506 Headphones

The gold standard in audio headphones (think Hollywood editors). While you don’t need these, you will love these.

Interfaces & Mixers

Focusrite Scarlett 2i2

Focusrite 2i2 Podcast Interface

A popular microphone interface that allows you to record with two speakers in the same room. The interface runs directly into your computer via USB.

Focusrite Scarlett 18i8

Focusrite 8i8 Podcast Interface

Like the 2i2, this interface records directly into your computer via USB, but the 18i8 allows for 4 speakers in the same room instead of 2.

Rodecaster Pro

Rodecaster Pro Ultimate Podcast Mixer

All you need to produce a world-class podcast from the comfort of your own office. It’s what we use and what many of our clients rely on.

4 XLR microphone inputs and the ability to take phone and Skype/Zoom calls with the press of a button. Strong enough to power the Shure SM7B.
